A message from our principal...

The following message went out to the whole BWDSB community today and will go home to parents tomorrow. If you are someone visiting our page to read about our EU adventures, please post a comment. Our students would love to hear some feedback!

Dufferin students are currently involved in a school-wide unit of study based upon the enduring understanding ‘small acts make a big difference—be the change’. Throughout this unit, students have had opportunities to respond to and connect with this enduring understanding. At this point in our unit, we would like to broaden our discussion. To this end, we have developed a blog that will give others an online opportunity to get involved. Staff and students can view student work, review comments and make their own comments connected to this enduring understanding. To ensure internet safety, all blog entries and responses are automatically redirected to Leanne Stredwick’s (our ‘blog master’) mailbox before they are posted on our blog. Grade 5 Responses to "Johnny the Bagger"

We watched a movie called "Johnny the Bagger." This movie was about a man who made every one happy by writing little notes and putting them in people's shopping bags. One lady thought it was a sweet idea for him to do that for everyone so she made an add for this company. The main idea of the movie is when one person can do a little, it can make everyone happy if every one can do a little. (MA, grade 5)

The movie Johnny the bagger was really good. I thought it connected to our EU because when Johnny gets home after work he is making a small act because he is only taking a little bit of time to make those notes. But, its making a big difference to the cuustomers who want to go to his checkout. Another small act was his dad giving him a computer so he can make all those notes to brighten some one's day. (TM, grade 5)

I think it relates to our EU becuase when the manager hired Johnny it made a difference to to him (to Johnny) and it made a huge difference for the customers. She made a difference to him by giving him a job that I think me enjoys and that he can be happy with. Johnny also makes a difference for the customers by making tothe rpeopl come. That made a differnce to the people that work there cause they could get paid more. (JG, grade 5)

In class, we watched a movie called Johnny the bagger. The message was that you can make a big difference by doing litle things (like putting little notes in people's grocery bags) you can make a difference for lots of people. It think it connects to our EU becuae he made a small act that made a big difference to lots of people. What made it more special was that he had Down's Syndrome - that proves that anyone can make a difference! (JS, grade 5)

In the movie, Johnny the Bagger, the message is that a small act of kindness affected people in a huge way. This message relates to our EU because by Honny giving his thought for the day, it moved people and encouraged peopl to come back to the store. (BV, grade 5)

I think Johnny the bagger connects to our EU because Johnny put a little something in each customer's bags. He was making a small act but it was a big difference to the customers because it showed that he cared. Even though Johnny had disabilites, he knew that he could make a difference and he did. Now everyone should be like Johnny. Also, that's totally what our EU is. Dufferin Dragons are working towards that and I know they will do it because they never give up. They soar about the clouds! And we will all end up to be Johnny someday. Remember - when everyone does a little - a lot gets done! (AN, grade 5)

I think the moie Johnny the bagger relates to our EU because Johnny had Down's Syndrome and he didn't let that get in the way. He decided with his dad that he would put thoughts on paper and put them into the customer's bags. The customers had a comforting phrase that made a big differnce for them. One person used to visit the store once a week but now she goes in every time she passes the store. Small acts do make a big difference! You could made a bidg differenc ein someone else's day by holding the door open for the elderly, making your bed, clearing the table after dinner, carrying a bag of groceris for someone else or making supper. Everyone can do a small act and made a bid difference - when everyone does a little a lot gets done! (SH, grade 5)

I think if Johnny hadn't helped that store lots of people would be sad and disappointed. I think this relates to the EU becuase Hohnny helped those people by getting their store back. Johnny and his dad were the change. If we keep on helping people then we can change the world! (KR, grade 5)

Johnny the bagger

As part of media in grade 5, we have been watching movie clips that speak to our EU. Mr. Russell posted the clip of Johnny the bagger so our class decided to see how it would link to our EU. To see the movie - visit - http://www.karmatube.org/videos.php?id=108. It's really worth looking at. Our responses follow....

Grade 5's first post on this blog

We are currently working with Mrs. Harris' class to write summaries to teach them how to eat healthfully. Our job is to write a summary that summarises the important information from the Canada Food guide. Some people are working together, others are working alone. Next Friday, we will be getting together to share our work with Mrs. Harris' students. They are in SK and Grade 1. We will post photographs of our work. This work connects to our EU because.
- The students will learn the proper choices to make and that small act will influence their parents too (Brandon)
- I think it will teach them to eat healthy because our small act of teaching them will help them to learn the right way for the rest of their lives(big difference) (Shaylin)
- if you make the choice (small act) to eat well, your body will be strong and healthy for life (big change) (Ryan)
- Eating an apple every day (small act) will make you a strong body (Tayan)
- By writing about our learning (small act) we are giving this information to others with the hope that they will make healthy choices too. (Kayla)

Sharing time!

At our staff meeting today, this blog will be shared and explained. My hope is that we send this link home to parents, kids and the community at large so that they can share in the activities that we are doing. Please post a comment when you visit our blog. Our students would like to here what is being said about it!

The kick off!

We decided that we wanted to start our Enduring Understanding work with a bang. So, it began last week with Miss Seeley and I feverishly cutting out photographs, quotations and biographies. We put them on yellow construction triangles around the school. The pictures were of influential people - such as Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Newton, Princess Diana etc. All of these people made a difference by using small acts. We placed them around the school and didn't tell the kids what they meant. We posed it as a mystery for them to solve. It certainly got them talking. One student spoke of the "invasion of the triangle people". Our goal is to have them question what these signs mean, how they are connected and how they can relate to the kids' lives. Today was the main kick off. We had a parent begin popcorn popping yesterday (thanks to Mr. Russell for opening the school on a Sunday afternoon!) and this morning my class collected reusable containers from the classes to fill up with freshly made popcorn. Each student enjoyed this as we watched the movie "Happy Feet". We wanted the message to be clear to all the students. Each teacher had been given a banner with the EU on it which was covered up with some of the quotations that were up around the school. Each class facilitated a discussion about the connectedness of what they had seen up around the school for the last week and how it related to the movie. Finally, the teachers discussed the quotations and slowly began to uncover the EU. By the end of the day, the students all knew what our EU for the project was and were excited to begin the journey. Tomorrow, they will participate in an on demand piece of writing to determine their current connectedness to the EU. This activity will be redone at the conclusion of the project and we will see how their writing and connection levels have changed. All of the Dufferin Dragons are pumped about this project! Please follow us in this journey!

A journey begins...

At our school, we are beginning an exciting project today. Our school has committed to using the idea "Small acts make a difference! Be the change!" for the next 6 weeks. Our classes will be embracing the idea in as many different ways as possible from our social studies curriculum through to our character ed program. We will live the moral with the hope of instilling its values in our students. Please stay tuned to our adventures over the next 6 weeks.
